‘Turner’s Sublime Legacy’ Among the Top 5 Most Visited Exhibitions at the Grimaldi Forum Monaco!

05 septembre 2024

The major summer 2024 event at the Grimaldi Forum, which showcased the work of J.M.W. Turner in dialogue with 15 contemporary artists, was a great success, attracting over 65,000 visitors in just 58 days.

According to Sylvie Biancheri, “This is an extremely satisfying result, the sixth-best attendance in nearly 25 years of exhibitions, for a subject that wasn’t initially expected to be among the most popular. The originality and quality of the theme were rewarded, and we are delighted. When measured by the number of days, this exhibition even ranks on par with Dali, A History of Painting (2019)[1], our third greatest success after Monet in Full Light (2023) and The Grace Kelly Years (2007). Congratulations to all our teams and thanks to our partners and sponsors!”

Francesco Grosoli, CEO of CMB Monaco, the official partner of the Grimaldi Forum, added, “This exhibition offered a unique possibility to see J.M.W. Turner’s works which rarely leave London in such large numbers, but also to discover paintings, photographs, and video installations by major modern and contemporary artists. We salute the impeccable quality of this exhibition, which testifies to the Grimaldi Forum's unique expertise under the enlightened management of its General Director. It was also an opportunity to leverage the CSR aspect of our partnership by sharing art workshops with children, adolescents, and young adults with autism, supported by the Monaco Disease Power Association.”

Inaugurated on July 4th by H.S.H. Prince Albert II, ‘Turner’s Sublime Legacy’ was open to the public from July 6th to September 1st, 2024. Featuring an ensemble of important works in a new scenography of over 2,000 square meters, this exhibition was an invitation to a journey through Joseph Mallord William Turner’s representations of the world in a sublime mode, from his landscapes to the elemental explorations of light and atmosphere of which he was a pioneer and master.

Coming from the Tate collection, which here granted the largest loan of Turner paintings ever made, a selection of 80 oils on canvas and works on paper have revealed the artist’s eminently sensitive and poetic conception of landscape, illustrating his innovative style and his qualities of abstraction, without equivalent in the history of painting.
His decisive influence on painting and by extension his legacy were portrayed throughout the exhibition in dialogue with nearly 30 works by leading modern and contemporary artists: John Akomfrah, Edward Burtynsky, Peter Doig, Olafur Eliasson, Howard Hodgkin, Roni Horn, Richard Long, Lisa Milroy, Cornelia Parker, Katie Paterson, Laure Prouvost, Mark Rothko, Wolfgang Tillmans, James Turrell and Jessica Warboys.

Turner, the Master of Sublime, in dialogue with contemporary artists on the representation of landscape and the relationship between Man and Nature. This was the bold approach taken by Curator Elizabeth Brooke, Senior Project Curator at Tate, addressing a theme that resonates with a highly topical issue.

This exhibition was organized in collaboration with TATE, with the support of CMB Monaco, SOTHEBY’S and GROUPE MARZOCCO.
