First performed in Venice in 1748, the comedy by Italian playwright Carlo Goldoni continues to amuse and surprise audiences. Rosaura, a young, beautiful, and wealthy Venetian widow, meets four suitors of different nationalities: Milord Runebif, the Englishman; Monsieur Le Blau, the Frenchman; Don Alvaro of Castile, the Spaniard; and Count Bosco Nero, the Italian. Each one tries to win her over, with the help of the mischievous Harlequin.

But Rosaura is undecided. With the help of her lady-in-waiting, Marionette, she devises a clever plan to make her choice. Yet surprise—like love, especially in Venice—is always just around the corner…
