ROMEO ET JULIETTE

Sun. 16th - Sat. 22nd November 2014

Roméo, Juliette…and the Monaco National Day

Created in 1867,” Roméo et Juliette” is Gounod's first uncontested theatre success, and the high point of his career. A unique event in operatic history, Gounod's opera includes no less than four love duets. The singular, emotional link between the two protagonists, skilfully woven by the faithful librettists Jules Barbier and Michel Carré, makes Gounod's “Roméo et Juliette” the best adaptation of Shakespeare's drama; in any case, the most stirring and most likely to move audiences today.

Music by Charles Gounod (1818-1893)

Booklet by Jules Barbier and Michel Carré, based on Shakespeare's drama.

Creation: Paris, Théâtre-Lyrique, April 27th 1867

New production, co-produced with the Teatro Carlo Felice of Genoa.
