Long recognised as one of the greatest science fiction works of all time, 2001: A Space Odyssey is celebrated for its technological realism, its innovative Oscar®-winning special effects and bold use of music.

The film brought worldwide fame to both Richard Strauss’ Also Sprach Zarathustra and the music of György Ligeti. It also created one of cinema’s most memorable images as a spaceship floats serenely through space to the strains of Johann Strauss’ waltz The Blue Danube.

Building towards a world premiere performance in June 2010, the Southbank Centre London worked closely with the British Film Institute, the rights holders Warner Bros. and the Kubrick estate to create the music-free version of the film, while the bespoke score was created in collaboration with the Philharmonia Orchestra London and conductor André de Ridder.

Since then, numerous orchestras around the globe have also presented this world-class event, including the New York Philharmonic, the National Symphony Orchestra, Chicago Symphony Orchestra and Sydney Symphony Orchestra.

2001: A Space Odyssey has been presented with live orchestral and choral accompaniment in 34 cities, across five continents, reaching a global audience of over 100,000 people.

As Warner Bros. celebrates 100 years of entertaining audiences around the world, the Monte-Carlo Philharmonic Orchestra will add a highlight to the yearlong celebration through Stanley Kubrick’s sci-fi epic 2001: A Space Odyssey, considered by many to be one of the greatest films of all time, performed live to picture (May 21).
