MONTE-CARLO PHILHARMONIC ORCHESTRA
Sun. 19th October 2014
Rachmaninoff Superstar
On Sunday October 19th, the Monte-Carlo Philharmonic Orchestra will offer you an exceptional, 100% Russian concert with the extremely talented pianist Evgeny Kissin, in the three masterpiece program of Sergei Rachmaninoff, under the direction of Lawrence Foster, and with the support of the Sergei Rachmaninoff Foundation.
To open, you will hear “Vocalise” for violin and orchestra, interpreted by the MCPO's brilliant soloist Liza Kerob. This piece is part of a series of 14 melodies (or Romances) written in 1912. Originally this piece was written for song, and was revised and orchestrated in 1915.
Second is the “Symphonic Dances”, the composer's last major work created in Philadelphia on January 3rd 1941 when he had been living in the United States for several years. But, like many exiles, he harboured a deep attachment to his home country, whence comes the profoundly Russian atmosphere of these "dances".
To close, the “Piano Concerto No. 2” created in 1901 in Moscow, remains the most famous of Rachmaninoff's works, and would supply enough credits for many generations of television viewers.
