Having already expressed his interest in classical music with The Beatles, Paul McCartney explores the genre further with Liverpool Oratorio, a work composed with Carl Davis to celebrate the 150th anniversary of the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra in 1991. Across eight movements, this oratorio tells the story of Shanty, a man born during World War II, addressing themes such as family, work, war, and hope. While the story is fictional, it contains autobiographical elements inspired by McCartney’s own life.
First performed in 1991 with renowned artists, this oratorio deeply moved audiences and achieved great success. The live recording, released by EMI Classics, became a commercial hit, topping classical music charts on both sides of the Atlantic.
A must-discover for fans of McCartney and classical music, performed by the Orchestre Philharmonique de Monte-Carlo, the CBSO Chorus, and the Children’s Choir of the Académie Rainier III.
