MONTE-CARLO PHILHARMONIC ORCHESTRA

Sun. 22nd September 2019 6:00pm

Shadow and light

For its opening concert of the 2019-2020 season, the Monte-Carlo Philharmonic Orchestra under the baton of its Artistic and Musical Director, Kazuki Yamada, welcomes its artist-in-residence, Marie-Nicole Lemieux, a contralto who stands out today in the firmament of singing. She will interpret the love songs from Elgar’s Sea Pictures, seascapes with a mix of calm seas and breaking waves. Victor de Sabata was the permanent conductor of the Monte-Carlo Opera Orchestra from 1918 to 1930. Saint-Saëns played the drafts of his new symphony to Liszt, without knowing that he would be dedicating the work to the memory of his friend, who died during its composition. And it is indeed the Liszt of the “symphonic poems” that seems to have inspired this work for a large orchestra.22
