MONTE-CARLO PHILHARMONIC ORCHESTRA

Sun. 22nd September 2013

The Monte-Carlo Philharmonic Orchestra is playing an exceptional concert in the Salle des Princeson Sunday22 September, conducted by the orchestra's artistic and music director, Maestro GianluigiGelmetti, and featuring international soloists –soprano Aga Mikolaj, alto Marianna Pizzolato, tenor Christian Elsner and bass Shenyang – plus the acclaimed choir of theAccademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia.

The orchestra will play Ludwig van Beethoven's grandiose Symphony n°9 for thisconcert organised with the help of the Association of Friends of the Monte-Carlo Philharmonic Orchestra.

This was performed for the first time inVienna on 7 May 1824, with the composer himself conducting. However, as by then he was almost totally deaf, he was assisted by Schuppanzigh and Umlauf who indicated all the movements at the beginning of each part.

The symphony was an immense success, with the audience even interrupting the performers with applause.

Three years later, on 26 May 1827, Beethoven passed away amidst peals of thunder during a snowstorm.

The Ninth Symphony was the first to use voices in the Final, setting the words of Schiller's Ode to Joy to music. At the end of his life Beethoven had finally achieved his lifelong ambition of celebrating joy, the joy won by conquering pain, the joy that liberates.
