MEFISTOFELE
Monte Carlo Opera
Sun. 13th - Sat. 19th November 2011
As opposed to the Faust by Gounod, Mefistofele deals with both parts of Goethe’s novel. The Italian composer wanted to keep the philosophical spirit that livens up the German masterpiece. Real “cultural bridge” between many countries that were used to wage war, Mefistofele appears as the first great European opera.
The conductor Arturo Toscanini manifests an unlimited admiration for the music of his fellow, and this already contributed a lot to the fame of this opera. Written at the same period as Aida, it already suggests elements of a new language, the one of the Giovane Scuola.
The technical modern tools that the Grimaldi Forum offers are a wonderful asset to make justice to what is certainly one of the most impressive works of the lyric directory, and one of the most beautiful scores ever written in Italy.
