OPERA LA FANCIULLA DEL WEST
Thurs. 22nd - Sun. 25th November 2012
Towards the conquest of “La Fanciulla del West”
The partition of “La Fanciulla del West” is introduced by a quotation of an old Californian story: " in this strange period of time, people who came God knows wherefrom grouped their strengths in these distant western lands, and, according to the hard law of the camp, quickly forgot their real name, fought, laughed, swore, loved, and achieved their surprising fate in a way which would seem incredible today. We are sure of one single thing, they lived. "
Puccini decided that his opera would so depict the life of the pioneers of the big West and proposed to the New York public a work as rich in atmospheres as musically luxurious.
The composer wished to write an opera which is closer to recent history. ”Fanciulla del West” reminded the Americans a page of history that some of them had lived or about which they had heard by a relative and among which the theme and the decoration were very present in their memory. “The Fanciulla” appears to us as a fascinating musical Western, worthy of Hollywood today, but also as the magnificent portrait of a woman of exception in the middle of a merciless male universe.
