A restored version
Jacques Demy's 1962 film starring Jeanne Moreau and Claude Mann has recently been restored byCiné-Tamaris and La Cinémathèque Française, with the backing of the Franco-American Cultural Fund, Monaco's Audiovisual Archives and the SOGEDA Monaco.
Story
Just before going on holiday, Jean Fournier, a modest Paris bank clerk, discovers gambling when his friend Caron takes him to the casino in Enghien. Fournier wins a large sum of money there, which sparks a passion that leads him into a world he has only known through books and films.
Review
True to the exercise of his art that we expect, Jacques Demy does not seek to present the viewer with an image of a world that has substance and fluidity. To the stability of reality he prefers the unpredictable world of gambling in which a flighty Jeanne Moreau is entrapped, fascinated and betrayed by both the roulette wheel and her dearest lover. Demy composes a film pure and pared in form, edged with bittersweet optimism. It has no equivalent in 1960s French cinema.
