The media event of 1956

The discovery, three years ago, of around ten boxes containing the reels and outtakes of Jean Masson’s 1956 film The Marriage of Monaco led to a preservation initiative for this iconic document, whose distribution across Europe, as well as in the United States and Japan, helped enhance the international media profile of the Principality.

Alongside the photochemical and digital restoration work carried out in the laboratory, research into the film’s production conditions, after it had remained unseen since its original theatrical release, has shed light on both its ambitions and the challenges of filming such an event “live.”

The history of this documentary, its restoration, and its analysis will be at the heart of a film lecture featuring the newly restored 4K version of the film, presented alongside other archival moving-image sources.
