THURSDAY LIVE SESSIONS - THE BONGO HOP

Thurs. 11th May 2017 6:30pm

The Bongo Hop is the new Afro-Caribbean project of trumpeter Etienne Stevet, who brings together singer Nidia Gongora, rapper Maikcel, and multi instrumentalist producer Patchworks.

Their first album, “Satingarona pt" offers a personal reading of tropical tempos and distils a burst of unstoppable rhythms combined with jazzy and intimate melodies, sometimes saturated with hot brass. This musical encounter is an art, which The Bongo Hop draws upon and takes, along with its name, from a mythical comic book figure from the 80s, the Afrobasian sailor Keubla, whose books, as a young teenager, were mixed with the records of Touré Kunda and Sunny Ade on winter evenings. Now we are “on the trail of the Bongo.”

The Bongo Hop’s first compositions were directed towards Afro-style hip-hop, all while blowing a fresh breeze towards new Cali nights in Colombia. It was in the context of a new hip hop collective named Zalama, which he played during one of his evening sessions, that he met the rapper Maikcel, both MC and singer blessed with a warm voice.

The meeting of with Patchworks in Lyon was the real catalyst for these compositions “hecho en Cali.” The cream of the local scene joined them, such as saxophonist Olivier Granger and drummer Remy Kaprielan. As for the stage, The Bongo Hop, with its changing membership, plays in various environments all while maintaining the same philosophy and energy. It always follows the same path: that of dance, from the caderazo to the Colombian.
