Variety Show -

In April the Ballets de Monte-Carlo brings us yet another stand-out programme showcasing its eclectic approach to choreography and its interpretative skills.

Audiences will discover bODY_rEMIX, one of Marie Chouinard's signature ballets. This is the first time the Canadian choreographer has invited a company other than her own to perform this world-renowned piece. In its succession of variations on the exercise of freedom, the dancers perform often on points and using various devices – crutches, ropes, prostheses, horizontal bars, harnesses – that at times liberate their movements, at others fetter them and sometimes actually create movement.

At the request of Jean-Christophe Maillot, Jeroen Verbruggen, the young Ballets de Monte-Carlo dancer and choreographer, joined forces with Paris style agency On Aura Tout Vu ("we've seen it all"), which captured Monaco's attention with its museography for the recent exhibition of Galéa collection dolls at Villa Sauber. From this collaboration came Kill Bambi, a "growing up" piece overflowing with energy, which melds superbly the artistic worlds of very different artists with distinctive characters.

Last but not least, Jean-Christophe Maillot gives us another opportunity to see hisAltro Canto I, which has been performed worldwide. In this captivating ballet, a visual resonation with the powerful music of Monteverdi, a vault of candles forms the backdrop to an architecture of bodies and gestures, illuminating the flowing movements with a soft, almost liturgical light. The art of cathedrals becomes sensual, church statues turn into live material.
