MONTE-CARLO OPERA : TOSCA

TOSCA

Mon. 16th - Sun. 22nd November 2015

A celebrated singer for our National Day

This opera in three acts by Giacomo Puccini, which has not been performed in the Principality since 2006, will enchant the public during the Monegasque National Holiday. This new production, directed by Jean-Louis Grinda, Director of the Monte Carlo Opera, will be performed by Martina Serafin, Marcelo Álvarez and Bryn Terfel.

The interest of Giacomo Puccini in the piece by Victorien Sardou goes back to 1889, when he attended two performances of La Tosca in which Sarah Bernhardt shined. Despite the misgivings of his librettist Giacosa, who deplored the lack of poetry of the piece, and thanks to the legendary instinct of his publisher Ricordi, Puccini gave birth to a drama that is as innovative as it is gripping. With great modernity, the action takes place in real time; One of the few distortions being Tosca's prayer, which Puccini thought about deleting. The Rhythm of the work, a veritable tribute to movement, can be compared with the emergence of a new and revolutionary art: the cinema. The opera, in fact, testifies to an admirable art of framing: Puccini knew instinctively where to put  his “camera”. Acts I and III function by using wide shots, but we regularly zoom in on the protagonists. Act II, the most cinematographic of the three, is an oppressive private space, of the type that Alfred Hitchcock would not have disowned.

After Tokyo, Valence and Turin, Jean-Louis Grinda's spectacle will find its place amongst the vast plateau of the Grimaldi Forum.
